Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Friday lashed out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his visits to Japan and upcoming trip to China, accusing him of neglecting the ongoing crisis in violence-hit Manipur.

In a post on social media platform X, Ramesh alleged that while the PM continued travelling abroad, the “long-suffering people of Manipur” were still waiting for him to visit the state and engage with local stakeholders. “He has simply and stubbornly refused to heal their wounds,” Ramesh wrote.

The Congress leader also criticised India’s handling of relations with China, claiming that the country was being forced to “normalise ties largely on Beijing’s terms”. He recalled PM Modi’s June 19, 2020 statement — “Na koi hamari seema mein ghus aaya hai, na hi koi ghusa hua hai” — saying it weakened India’s negotiating position after border tensions.

Ramesh further alleged that the government had overlooked China’s “jugalbandi with Pakistan during Operation Sindoor”, despite it being flagged by India’s own military. He blamed the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister for mishandling both external security concerns and internal unrest.

Meanwhile, PM Modi, currently in Tokyo, was welcomed by the Indian diaspora during his first standalone visit to Japan in nearly seven years. His trip focuses on deepening bilateral ties and strengthening the Special Strategic and Global Partnership with Japan.

From August 31 to September 1, the PM will head to Tianjin, China, to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, where he is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with Chinese Premier Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
